Which type of device do I choose for field staff?

ServiceM8 optimises for Apple iPhone & iPad devices. If you want to get the most out of ServiceM8 for your business, we'd recommend an iPhone or cellular iPad for you field technicians.

However, if you work with subcontractors or temporary/casual workers, or your field staff only need basic functionality, where it isn't practical to equip these workers with an iPhone or iPad, check out the ServiceM8 Lite app for Android.

Regarding choosing an Apple mobile device for field staff — iPhones are great because they’re easy to carry on you at all times, and therefore easier to get out and check something, take a photo or record a note. Plus, you only need one mobile device.

iPads are great if you need a larger display, perhaps if you complete a lot of forms on site, annotate photos or draw diagrams through ServiceM8. iPads can also be a bit more transferable between team members, which may be a consideration.

Choosing relatively new devices which are capable of running the latest iOS version will result in a better experience, and a longer window of access to new versions of the ServiceM8 app as time passes.

Ongoing device & iOS support considerations

ServiceM8 is constantly working to improve and update the ServiceM8 iOS app.

We immediately support major iOS updates with aligned updates of our own, consistently incorporating the latest iOS features to make ServiceM8 more accessible, intuitive and useful. This means that on a rolling basis, the latest version of the ServiceM8 iOS app will only be available to download on devices capable of running an iOS within one or two versions of the latest version.

For example, in September 2024, iOS 18 was released, and the ServiceM8 13 app was released shortly after. A device capable of running iOS 16.5 is able to download ServiceM8 13, however a device that only supports up to iOS 15 will not.

For devices which become unable to run the iOS version required to download the latest version of the ServiceM8 iOS app, they will still be able to access an older version of the app — however, they will not be able to download the latest version of the app.

Further, some ServiceM8 features require device-specific and/or iOS-specific features (e.g. ServiceM8’s Room Scan requires iOS 16.5  + a device with LiDAR technology).

ServiceM8 will continue to support older devices and iOS versions, however the use of relatively recent devices and the current iOS version will yield the best results and user experience.

These are considerations when setting your field staff up with iOS devices.

I can't find the ServiceM8 app on the App Store?

If you can't find the ServiceM8 app on the iOS App Store, it's most likely because you are searching on an older Apple device running an iOS version that the latest ServiceM8 app does not support.

First, you should review the above table to see whether the latest ServiceM8 app supports the latest iOS the device is capable of running, and if so, upgrade to the latest iOS version available to the device. The ServiceM8 app will then become available to download in the App Store.

Here's a direct link to the ServiceM8 app in the App Store.

If your device is not capable of running the latest iOS supported by the latest ServiceM8 app, then:

  • The ServiceM8 app will not appear in the App Store on your device; or
  • The ServiceM8 app will appear in the App Store, but won't be available to download.

In this scenario, you can still download an older version of the ServiceM8 app by following the below steps:

  1. Download the ServiceM8 app on a newer iOS device which can access the latest ServiceM8 app.
  2. Using the same iCloud account as used with the device in Step 1, log in to the older device. You will then be able to access and download an older version of the ServiceM8 app in the App Store.
