# Can I set job numbers manually rather than automatically?
> Find out whether you can set job numbers manually rather than automatically in ServiceM8.
No, ServiceM8 doesn't support user-defined job numbers.
There are numerous benefits to having ServiceM8 automatically allocate your jobs numbers for you. You will not have duplicate jobs because of staff mis-communication or staff in multiple locations booking jobs at the same time.
However, depending on your requirements, you can adjust the automatic job number to suit your business — you can set the next automatic job number, or add prefix or suffix characters to your job numbers.

Keep in mind that you can only go to a higher number. If you set your number too high you won't be able to reset it to a lower number.

* Prefixes can contain letters, numbers, dashes and underscores .
* Suffixes can contain letters, dashes and underscores.
* You can have up to 4 characters total across prefixes and suffixes.
